Chicago, IL – Severe thunderstorms could impact Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, bringing damaging winds and hail to parts of the state. Residents in Chicago, Rockford, Aurora, and surrounding areas should prepare for potentially strong storms.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and early evening. Some storms could intensify, producing wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines, as well as hail that could dent cars and structures.
The highest risk area includes northern and central Illinois, with cities such as Bloomington, Peoria, and Champaign also under a severe weather threat. Storms will move northeast at approximately 45 mph, increasing the risk of quick-hitting severe conditions.
Officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and stay updated on changing conditions. Lightning and gusty winds will accompany all thunderstorms, making outdoor activities hazardous.
