Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert, effective immediately, due to increased wildfire risks caused by dry and windy conditions. Officials will reassess conditions on Sunday.

According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, a cold front moving through the state will bring low humidity and strong gusty winds throughout the weekend. While some areas may see precipitation, it is unlikely to be sufficient to mitigate the wildfire risk. The alert is meant to strongly discourage outdoor burning and reduce the strain on emergency responders.

“The combination of wind, low relative humidity and dry fuels is very favorable for wildfire ignitions, so we ask that people who don’t have to burn to hold off until these conditions subside,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “The dramatic uptick in wildfires across the state over the last two months were in large part the result of exactly these typical springtime weather patterns.”

Although the Red Flag Fire Alert does not prohibit outdoor burning, it signals heightened fire danger. Residents should check with local authorities regarding specific burn restrictions, as some counties and municipalities enforce bans during these conditions. Land managers conducting prescribed burns are urged to take extra precautions.

South Carolina has already seen 277 wildfires in March, following 280 in February—above the five-year average for that month. Officials warn that March historically experiences increased wildfire activity.

The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the Forestry Commission, whose fire managers will continue monitoring conditions statewide. Residents are advised to stay informed through the SCFC website and local emergency updates.
