Central Illinois – Residents across Central Illinois are preparing for dangerously cold temperatures Monday, with windchills forecast to drop 20 degrees below zero.
The National Weather Service has issued a windchill advisory for the region, warning of frostbite risks within minutes of exposure. According to meteorologists, temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing throughout the day, with winds reaching up to 20 mph. The combination of wind and subzero air temperatures will create life-threatening conditions.
Local authorities urge residents to limit time outdoors and bundle up if venturing outside. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes under these extreme conditions. Officials recommend wearing multiple layers, hats, gloves, and insulated boots.
Emergency shelters and warming centers are opening throughout the area to assist those without adequate heating. Community leaders stress the importance of checking on elderly neighbors, pets, and those without access to heat.
Meteorologists predict the extreme cold will ease slightly by Tuesday, but temperatures will remain below average.
