Rochester, New York — Minor lake effect snow is expected to bring localized travel impacts across parts of western and north-central New York on Wednesday, primarily southeast of Lake Ontario.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a broad area of lake-enhanced snow will produce additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches today, with the highest totals expected across Wayne County, portions of northern Cayuga County, and areas east of Rochester. Snowfall is forecast to persist through the afternoon before gradually tapering this evening.

Elsewhere across western and north-central New York, little to no snow accumulation is expected, with conditions remaining mostly dry outside the lake-effect zone. The sharp cutoff in snowfall is typical of lake effect systems, meaning conditions can vary significantly over short distances.

Drivers traveling along Interstate 90 (New York Thruway), Route 104, U.S. Route 20, and nearby secondary roads may encounter periods of reduced visibility and slick pavement, especially during heavier snow bursts. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are most susceptible to brief hazardous conditions.

The National Weather Service notes that snowfall rates are expected to remain light to moderate, limiting widespread disruptions. However, localized snow-covered roads could impact the Wednesday commute, particularly in areas closer to Lake Ontario where snow bands are more persistent.

Communities including Rochester, Webster, Sodus, Geneva, and nearby rural areas may see brief travel slowdowns as snow showers pass through. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds, increase following distance, and remain alert for changing conditions.

Temperatures will remain cold enough for snow to accumulate on grassy surfaces and untreated pavement, though road treatment efforts should help minimize impacts on major highways.

Snow showers are expected to diminish later this evening as lake influence weakens. No additional significant accumulation is anticipated overnight.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from weather.gov/buf and local officials for the latest information on road conditions and snowfall trends.
