Detroit, MI – A Detroit man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday morning on the city’s west side, according to the Detroit Police Department (DPD).
Police said Michael Alan Harris, 42, of Detroit, has been charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office with First-Degree Murder, Felony Firearm, Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer in the death of Jalen Coats Stevens, 28, also of Detroit.
According to DPD, officers responded around 1:05 a.m. on January 4, 2026, to a report of a stabbing at a lounge in the 15900 block of Grand River Avenue. When police arrived, they learned a physical altercation between Harris and Stevens had allegedly escalated. Investigators said Harris allegedly produced a handgun and fired, striking Stevens in the left shoulder.
Medics pronounced Stevens dead at the scene. Harris was later taken into custody.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
