Richmond, IN – A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday after a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. 35 in Wayne County, leaving investigators working to determine how the victim ended up in the roadway and what caused the chain of events that followed.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at about 6:07 a.m. to the area in front of Love’s Truck Stop at 2698 U.S. 35 North in Richmond on a report of a person struck by a vehicle. When officers arrived, they found an unidentified adult male lying in the roadway with severe head and body trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators are still working to positively identify him.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2018 white Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Isabelle Waldron, 24, of Williamsburg, Indiana, was traveling southbound on U.S. 35 when the initial impact occurred. Waldron reportedly told investigators the crash happened unexpectedly and she did not see the victim prior to the collision.
Two additional northbound vehicles — a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Matthew Murphy, 41, and a 2000 GMC Jimmy driven by Stephen Davis, 38, both of Richmond — also allegedly struck the victim after the first impact.
Investigators say intoxication does not appear to be a factor, though toxicology results are pending with the Indiana State Police Laboratory. Authorities noted that early-morning darkness and poor visibility may have contributed.
Sheriff’s Office crash reconstruction specialists documented the scene using physical evidence and technology, stating that current findings are consistent with the victim already being in the roadway before the initial collision.
The investigation remains active. Additional information will be released when available.
