Wayne County, IN – A serious crash Tuesday morning in Wayne County left one driver critically injured and shut down a rural intersection for several hours, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on January 13 at the intersection of North Centerville Road and Webster Road. A preliminary investigation found that a yellow Ford Focus, driven by 61-year-old Stephen Routson of Williamsburg, was traveling southbound when it collided with a white Dodge Ram driven by 56-year-old Elmer Kelley Jr. of Richmond.
According to investigators, Routson’s vehicle reportedly failed to yield, leading to a collision that sent both vehicles off the roadway. Routson was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by crews from Centerville Fire, Webster Township Fire, and Reid Health.
Routson was flown by CareFlight medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Kelley was transported to Reid Health with minor injuries, officials said.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Drone Unit and crash reconstruction team documented the scene. Roads in the area were closed for about three hours. The incident remains under investigation, and authorities say all findings are preliminary at this time.
