Newark, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties, where up to 5 to 10 inches of snow is expected beginning 1 a.m. Thursday and continuing through 7 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
Forecasters warn that the snow will develop in narrow, persistent bands off Lake Ontario, leading to rapidly changing travel conditions. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, with visibility dropping to near zero at times.
The most dangerous travel periods are expected during the Thursday morning and evening commutes, when snow intensity will increase and strong crosswinds may affect drivers on Route 104, Route 31, and nearby rural roads.
“Travel will be difficult,” the National Weather Service said in its statement. “Areas of blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility, especially within the most persistent lake-effect bands.”
Communities such as Newark, Fair Haven, Wolcott, and Lyons could see some of the heaviest totals, depending on the band placement. Snowfall will likely vary sharply across short distances, with some areas receiving only light accumulations while others see near whiteout conditions.
Drivers are urged to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, reduce speed, and allow for extra travel time through early Friday morning.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to submit snow reports and observations via its official website or social media channels as the event develops.
