Wausau, WI – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m. to noon Tuesday for portions of central Wisconsin, where wet snow is expected to impact the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Green Bay. Snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts up to 4 inches possible.
The advisory includes Wood, Portage, Waupaca, and Waushara counties, covering communities such as Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Plover, Waupaca, Wautoma, and surrounding areas. Wet, heavy snow will begin overnight and intensify toward daybreak, creating slick roads and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.
According to NWS Green Bay, the heaviest snowfall is expected between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., when snow rates may briefly increase enough to coat roadways, especially untreated or secondary roads. With temperatures near freezing, even modest snowfall can accumulate quickly and produce hazardous travel conditions. Slush buildup is likely, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and rural roadways.
Forecasters caution that the Tuesday morning commute will be impacted, and drivers should allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and maintain safe following distances. Heavy, wet snow may also be difficult to clear from vehicles, adding extra time before departure.
Snow will gradually taper late Tuesday morning, with most areas seeing significant improvement by midday. However, lingering slick spots may remain in shaded areas or on less-traveled roads into early afternoon.
Residents across central Wisconsin are encouraged to stay updated on conditions and check 511 Wisconsin for the latest road reports before traveling.
