Watertown, NY – A light glaze of freezing rain could create slick roads across parts of Jefferson County during the Wednesday morning commute, especially in communities near the Thousand Islands.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday for Jefferson County, including Watertown. The freezing rain is expected to be most concentrated across the far northern portion of the county near the Thousand Islands region.
Forecasters say ice accumulation will remain light, generally a glaze up to a few hundredths of an inch, but even thin ice can make untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks slippery. Areas closest to the St. Lawrence River may see the most persistent freezing rain early Wednesday morning.
Drivers along Interstate 81 and Route 12 near Watertown, as well as roads across northern Jefferson County, should allow extra travel time and reduce speed where surfaces appear wet or icy.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Wednesday morning as temperatures rise and precipitation changes over or ends. Officials continue to urge motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling during the advisory period.
