Watertown, NY – A prolonged and potentially crippling lake-effect snow event is expected to bring dangerous to impossible travel conditions across northern New York beginning Sunday and lasting through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday through 4 p.m. Wednesday for Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties. Snow totals of 2 to 4 feet are forecast, with wind gusts up to 45 mph creating extensive blowing and drifting snow.

The most severe impacts are expected along Interstate 81, Route 11, and secondary roadways near Watertown, Fort Drum, and the Tug Hill Plateau. Snowfall rates could reach up to 4 inches per hour at times, particularly Monday night through Tuesday night, leading to near-zero visibility and whiteout conditions.

Officials warn that travel may become very difficult or impossible, with hazardous conditions impacting the Monday through Wednesday commutes. Gusty winds may also down tree branches and cause isolated power outages.

Temperatures are expected to plunge Monday night, with wind chills dropping to zero to 10 degrees below zero, increasing the risk for stranded motorists.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for extended disruptions, and closely monitor forecast updates as snowbands shift.
