Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across north central and northeast Iowa should prepare for hazardous travel conditions late Tuesday as accumulating snow spreads across the region and impacts the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning for portions of north central into northeast Iowa. Snow is expected to develop and persist through the overnight hours, with most areas picking up 2 to 3 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible where snow bands linger.
The advisory covers a wide swath of the state, including Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Kossuth, Wright, Franklin, Butler, Bremer, Grundy, and Black Hawk counties. Cities such as Mason City, Clear Lake, Algona, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Waverly, Hampton, and Grundy Center are likely to see snow-covered roads during the Tuesday evening commute. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads will become slick quickly as snowfall continues.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. The Iowa Department of Transportation recommends checking real-time conditions through the Iowa 511 system before traveling.
Snow tapers off late tonight into early Wednesday, but slick spots may linger into the morning hours. Drivers should remain alert for lingering impacts, especially on less-traveled roads.
