Waterloo, Iowa – Strong to severe thunderstorms are tracking across northeast Iowa this afternoon, bringing a risk of damaging winds and large hail through 4:30 p.m. Residents from Fort Dodge to Cedar Rapids are urged to take shelter as the storms push east.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a line of storms is moving rapidly through the region, with gusts strong enough to cause tree damage and potential power outages. Quarter-size hail is also possible, raising concerns for vehicle and crop damage.
Communities including Mason City, Waterloo, and Cedar Rapids are in the highest impact zone. Outdoor events and travel plans should be postponed until the storms pass. Drivers on I-35, I-380, and U.S. Highway 20 should be prepared for sudden low visibility in heavy rain and hazardous crosswinds.
Residents should remain indoors and away from windows. Those in campers or outdoor shelters should seek a sturdy building immediately. The threat will lessen after 4:30 p.m., but additional advisories could be issued if storms redevelop.
