Spokane, WA – Freezing fog and black ice are creating dangerous driving conditions across eastern Washington, including the Columbia Basin and Palouse regions. Residents are urged to slow down, remain alert, and allow extra travel time as visibility drops below a quarter mile in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing fog will persist through Thursday morning, with additional hazardous conditions expected this weekend. Patches of black ice are already reported on local highways, including Interstate 90 and Route 2. With temperatures hovering near 32°F, untreated roads and bridges are especially prone to icing.
Thursday’s high will reach 33°F, with dense fog lifting around mid-morning. Overnight lows will dip to 27°F, bringing renewed risks for freezing conditions. Drivers should monitor their routes and avoid sudden braking to maintain control on slippery surfaces.
Looking ahead, Friday will see areas of freezing fog lingering into the late morning, followed by cloudy skies and a high of 39°F. Precipitation chances increase Friday night, with freezing rain turning to rain by Saturday morning. Roads may remain treacherous as temperatures hover near freezing.
The weekend forecast brings a mix of rain and snow Saturday night into Sunday, potentially disrupting travel plans. Residents should check updated advisories, especially if traveling through higher elevations.
The NWS recommends keeping headlights on low beam, maintaining a safe following distance, and carrying emergency supplies when driving in these conditions.
