Seattle, Washington – Drivers heading into the North Cascades within the next few hours face snow-covered highways and wind gusts up to 35 mph that could trigger temporary road closures before daybreak Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including the Mount Baker area, until 4 a.m. Friday. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations up to 12 inches, with gusty winds strong enough to blow snow across higher elevation roadways.

Statewide, the heaviest impacts center on northwest Washington’s mountain corridors, where traction requirements and sudden visibility drops could slow freight and recreational traffic. Blowing snow may create brief whiteout conditions along exposed stretches near Mount Baker Highway and other elevated routes.

In Whatcom and Skagit counties, snow-packed pavement and drifting could make travel difficult at times overnight. Washington State Department of Transportation crews may implement temporary closures if conditions deteriorate. Gusts near 35 mph could also snap small branches and cause isolated power outages in higher elevations.

Travelers should slow down, carry chains and check WSDOT pass reports before departure. Charge devices in case of outages and allow extra time for mountain travel.

The advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. Friday, and additional alerts could be issued if snowfall rates intensify overnight.
