Seattle, WA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Cascade Mountains of western Washington through early Wednesday morning, as heavy snow and possible freezing rain are expected to cause dangerous driving conditions for Thanksgiving travelers.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, snow began late Tuesday morning and will continue into the night, with accumulations up to 10 inches above 2,000 feet—including Snoqualmie, Stevens, and White Pass. Mixed precipitation, including light freezing rain, is also possible near Snoqualmie Pass during the evening hours, leading to a thin glaze of ice on road surfaces.
Forecasters warn that travel across the passes will be very difficult, with slick roads, blowing snow, and rapidly changing visibility expected. The advisory covers the Cascades of Snohomish, King, Pierce, and Lewis counties, including Crystal Mountain, Mount Rainier, Ashford, and Paradise.
Officials urge drivers to check road conditions at wsdot.wa.gov/travel before heading into the mountains and to carry tire chains or traction devices. Those planning to travel Tuesday night or early Wednesday are advised to delay travel if possible and prepare for possible power outages or delays.
Conditions are expected to improve Wednesday as precipitation tapers off, though lingering snow showers could continue through Thanksgiving morning at higher elevations.
