Okanogan County, WA – Drivers across north central Washington should prepare for snow-covered and slippery roads as a winter weather system moves into the region late Tuesday, impacting travel overnight and into Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Okanogan Highlands from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected along Chesaw Road, Highway 20 at Wauconda Summit, Boulder Creek Road, and Sherman Pass, where higher elevations are most vulnerable to slick conditions.

A second advisory covers Western Okanogan County, including Mazama, Twisp, Methow, Winthrop, Conconully, and Loup Loup Pass, from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 4 p.m. Wednesday. In these areas, 2 to 5 inches of snow could fall, creating hazardous travel conditions for much of the day.

Forecasters warn that the snow could significantly impact the Wednesday morning commute, particularly on mountain passes and untreated secondary roads. In addition to reduced traction, snow accumulation on trees may lead to downed branches, power outages, and localized property damage, especially in valley communities surrounded by forested terrain.

Travel could become difficult at times, and drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden maneuvers. Even modest snowfall totals can create dangerous conditions when combined with cold temperatures and overnight accumulation.

Residents and travelers are encouraged to monitor road conditions before heading out. The latest updates for Washington highways and mountain passes are available through the Washington State Department of Transportation at wsdot.wa.gov/travel.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Wednesday as snowfall tapers off, but slick spots may linger in shaded and higher-elevation areas.
