Seattle, WA – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including the Mount Baker area, as heavy snowfall intensifies across the region, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.
The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday, with total snow accumulations expected to reach 12 to 22 inches in higher elevations. Snowfall rates may be heavy at times, creating rapidly deteriorating conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will bring dangerous to potentially impossible travel conditions, especially along mountain passes and access roads near Mount Baker. Whiteout conditions, deep snow accumulation, and slick road surfaces are all possible during the warning period.
Forecasters warn that travel could become extremely hazardous or impossible, and those heading into the mountains are urged to reconsider plans. Power outages are also possible due to heavy snow loading on trees and power lines.
Drivers who must travel are advised to carry extra food, water, warm clothing, and a flashlight, and to be prepared for extended delays or emergency situations. Chain restrictions or pass closures may be implemented with little notice.
This storm impacts areas across Whatcom County and Skagit County, particularly higher elevations of the North Cascades, a popular destination for winter recreation.
Residents and travelers should closely monitor updates from the National Weather Service and Washington State Department of Transportation as conditions evolve through the day and overnight.
