Seattle, WA – As Washington moves into Black Friday weekend, state weather officials are urging Seattle-area homeowners to complete winter preparations ahead of freezing nighttime temperatures expected to move across the Puget Sound region.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), La Niña may bring colder and more variable early-winter conditions to Washington this season. Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett may see overnight lows fall into the low 30s late Friday into Saturday, while communities east of the Cascades, including Spokane and Yakima, could dip into the teens. These conditions raise the risk of frozen pipes, roof ice, and heating-system strain, especially in older homes across King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.

Home maintenance specialists advise residents to prioritize insulating exposed pipes, particularly those running through crawl spaces and exterior walls common in Seattle homes. Clearing gutters and downspouts is also crucial—Washington’s frequent rainfall can quickly contribute to ice buildup when temperatures fall below freezing overnight.

Energy experts recommend sealing draft-prone windows and doors, checking attic insulation, and testing furnace or heat pump systems before colder December air arrives. Seattle Fire officials further urge homeowners to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, noting a seasonal increase in heating-related calls after Thanksgiving.

NWS also recommends preparing backup lighting, weather radios, and portable heat sources for areas outside the Puget Sound that may see stronger winds and overnight freezes during the holiday weekend. River and coastal communities should also watch for localized frost and freeze advisories.

Emergency managers encourage residents to check on older adults or neighbors who may need assistance with winter preparations, especially during the busy Black Friday travel window.
