Spokane, Washington – Strong southwest winds sweeping through central Washington Saturday evening could cause travel disruptions and increase wildfire risk, especially in dry grasslands near the Blue Mountains and the L-C Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. PDT on May 31 for portions of central Washington, including Ellensburg, Yakima, Lewiston, and surrounding counties. Sustained winds from the west to southwest are expected to reach 20 to 35 mph, with gusts peaking at 55 mph in some areas.
Drivers on I-82, U.S. 97, and other north-south highways may face difficult conditions due to strong crosswinds. High-profile vehicles, such as trucks and RVs, are especially vulnerable. Boaters should also prepare for choppy lake conditions. In addition, unsecured outdoor items could become dangerous projectiles.
The winds may also elevate the chance of fast-moving grass fires. Residents are urged to avoid burning debris, secure loose objects, and stay alert to changing conditions.
The advisory expires at 11 p.m., but similar patterns could return Sunday. Residents should check for updates from local emergency agencies and the National Weather Service.
