Pendleton, OR – Travel across the Eastern Columbia River Gorge could turn dangerous Monday as powerful winds batter the region, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph through 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service office in Pendleton, a Wind Advisory is in effect for the Gorge region spanning Washington and Oregon, including Kittitas Valley. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts nearing 50 mph, are expected between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. PDT today. The advisory carries a 70–90% confidence in hazardous wind speeds.
Drivers along Interstate 82, U.S. Route 97, and State Route 14 should prepare for strong crosswinds, especially in high-profile vehicles like trucks, RVs, and buses. In cities like Ellensburg and Goldendale, residents may also experience downed branches and localized power interruptions.
Travelers are urged to check updated road conditions before departing and allow extra distance between vehicles. High winds could also impact ferry crossings and exposed bridge routes in the Gorge area. Officials advise slowing down and avoiding travel across elevated areas when possible. The Eastern Columbia River Gorge frequently experiences spring wind events, but today’s gusts are stronger than typical seasonal averages.
Wind hazards are expected to taper off late tonight, but forecasters warn that additional advisories may be issued if gusty conditions persist into Tuesday morning.
