Washington greets the morning with whipping winds and bursts of wet snow rattling windows across the Inland Northwest. Trees sway hard, loose branches snap, and road spray mixes with flakes as conditions change fast.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for Spokane and surrounding areas through this afternoon, with southwest winds sustained at 30 to 45 mph and gusts reaching 60 to 65 mph. Isolated gusts could briefly push higher in exposed locations. At the same time, bands of snow and rain showers sweep west to east, reducing visibility with little notice.

Drivers should use extreme caution along I-90, U.S. 395, and elevated routes, where sudden gusts can shove vehicles sideways. High-profile vehicles face the greatest risk, especially during heavier snow bursts. Brief whiteout conditions remain possible as showers intensify.

Temperatures hover near 50 early, but colder air works in behind the system. Snow levels drop toward 2,000 feet, allowing snow to mix in even within the Spokane metro at times. Accumulation remains light, but slick spots may form quickly as winds push moisture across pavement.

Residents are urged to secure holiday decorations, garbage cans, and outdoor furniture. Tree damage and scattered power outages remain a concern through the afternoon.

Conditions gradually ease tonight as winds weaken. Thursday brings a calmer break with cooler air and lingering snow chances. By Friday, another system introduces rain and snow mix potential, keeping roads damp and temperatures in the low 40s.

Looking ahead to Christmas Travel weekend, unsettled winter weather stays in the picture. While major snow is not locked in, models hint at continued snow chances and temperature swings, especially for travelers heading over mountain passes.
