Washington – Headlights glow softly through a gray veil as dense fog presses low across Spokane, muting sound and shrinking visibility block by block. The air feels heavy and still, a classic mid-winter setup that brings both travel risks and air quality concerns.
The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for the Spokane area through mid-morning. Visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less, especially in downtown Spokane, Spokane Valley, and nearby communities. Calm winds allow fog to thicken near roadways, rail corridors, and low-lying neighborhoods.
Morning travel remains the biggest concern. Conditions can change rapidly, even within a few blocks. Drivers should slow down, use low-beam headlights, and expect sudden stops along arterials and neighborhood streets. Bridges and shaded areas may also hold slick patches where moisture freezes near the freezing mark.
An Air Stagnation Advisory is also in effect through early next week. With little wind and trapped cold air, pollutants can build near the surface. Sensitive groups, including those with respiratory conditions, should limit prolonged outdoor activity.
Fog gradually lifts late this morning, allowing partial sunshine and highs near the upper 30s. Clearing is uneven, and some areas may stay gray longer than others. Tonight, fog redevelops as temperatures fall into the mid-20s.
Saturday and Sunday follow a similar winter pattern. Expect areas of fog during the mornings, then filtered sun and highs near 38 to 40. Cold nights continue, keeping frost and slick spots in play for early drivers.
MLK Day Monday looks brighter overall. Mostly sunny skies are expected by afternoon, with highs near 40. Still, morning fog remains possible before clearing improves.
Plan extra time for morning travel through the holiday weekend. How thick was the fog where you live today?
