Spokane, WA – Strong northerly winds are expected to sweep through Eastern Washington and parts of the Inland Northwest on Wednesday, bringing gusts between 25 and 45 mph that could disrupt travel and boating.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, wind speeds will peak Wednesday afternoon and evening, especially across areas such as Moses Lake, Wilbur, and Spokane, where gusts may top 40 mph. The agency issued a wind alert urging caution for boaters and drivers due to the risk of rough lake conditions, blowing dust, and sudden crosswinds.

Several lakes, including Lake Pend Oreille, Priest Lake, Banks Lake, and Lake Coeur d’Alene, may see choppy, hazardous waters. Boaters are encouraged to wear life jackets and avoid open water if possible. Fire danger may also increase as the winds could spread existing flames quickly in dry brush areas.

Gusty conditions may persist into Wednesday night before easing Thursday morning, accompanied by a drop in daytime temperatures. Typical springtime wind events like this can lead to power line impacts, minor property damage, and visibility reductions for high-profile vehicles.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and monitor local alerts for updates through Wednesday evening.
