Seattle, Washington – Travel across Washington’s Cascade passes could become very difficult Friday as a fast-moving winter system delivers heavy snow from morning through the evening hours, with impacts extending into the Friday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from early Friday morning through late Friday evening for the Cascades of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, and King counties. Snow totals between 6 and 12 inches are expected, including at Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie Pass, Mount Baker, Greenwater, and SR-18 at Tiger Mountain Summit.

Snow levels are expected to start near 2,500 feet Friday morning, allowing snow to fall mainly at pass level early. By Friday evening, snow levels are forecast to drop below 1,000 feet, increasing the risk for rapid accumulation and slick conditions during peak travel hours. This shift could significantly slow traffic along I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass and Highway 2 over Stevens Pass.

The combination of steady snowfall and falling snow levels may also lead to reduced visibility and difficult driving conditions, especially after sunset. Travelers heading into the mountains should plan for chain requirements, allow extra time, and be prepared for possible power outages in higher terrain.

Drivers are urged to slow down, monitor pass conditions closely, and check WSDOT updates before traveling. Additional advisories remain possible if snow persists beyond Friday evening.
