Spokane, WA – Drivers across central Washington may face hazardous conditions this weekend as blowing dust is forecast for several highways and communities.

According to the National Weather Service Spokane, strong winds and dry conditions could create dust storms Saturday and Sunday afternoons, reducing visibility to one mile or less. The affected region includes Moses Lake, the Waterville Plateau, and the Upper Columbia Basin.

Forecasters expect wind gusts of 15 to 20 mph Saturday, increasing to 25 to 35 mph on Sunday. These conditions are likely to stir up dust across open fields and highways, including Interstate 90 between George and Moses Lake, U.S. Highway 395 from Ritzville to the Tri-Cities, and U.S. Highway 2 between Waterville and Wilbur.

Officials caution that reduced visibility may make driving dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles and during evening hours when dust clouds are harder to spot. Residents and travelers are urged to monitor weather updates and allow extra time for travel.

Blowing dust can also pose respiratory concerns for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and people with asthma. The NWS advises limiting outdoor activities in areas where dust is thickest.

This blowing dust risk is expected to last through Sunday evening before conditions improve.
