Seattle, Washington – Snow-covered roads and gusty winds are creating difficult driving conditions across the Cascade passes tonight, with impacts expected through 4 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish and northern King counties. Additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected near Mount Baker, with up to 1 inch around Stevens Pass. Winds may gust as high as 35 mph, producing areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Travelers heading across Stevens Pass on U.S. Highway 2 and State Route 542 near Mount Baker should prepare for slick pavement and possible brief closures. Snow may accumulate quickly on untreated surfaces, especially at higher elevations. Gusty winds could also knock down small tree branches, leading to isolated power outages.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and carry traction devices where required. Check Washington State Department of Transportation updates before departing.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 4 a.m., but crews may continue clearing snow from the passes into the early morning commute.
