Stevens Pass, Washington – Heavy snow is rapidly building across the central Washington Cascades tonight, and travel over Stevens Pass could become extremely difficult through early Tuesday as snowfall intensifies.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday for western Chelan County, including Stevens Pass, Stehekin, and Holden Village. Forecasters expect between 1 and 2 feet of snowfall during this period, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph along exposed ridges.
The combination of heavy snow and gusty winds may create low visibility and snow-covered highways across mountain routes such as U.S. Highway 2 at Stevens Pass. Officials warn travel conditions could deteriorate quickly, with some periods of near whiteout conditions possible overnight.
Heavy snow accumulating on trees could also increase the risk of falling branches and scattered power outages in higher elevations.
Another stronger round of snowfall is expected later this week. A Winter Storm Watch takes effect late Tuesday night and continues through Friday morning, when an additional 2 to 4 feet of snow could fall across the Cascade crest.
Washington transportation officials urge drivers to check the latest pass conditions at wsdot.wa.gov before traveling through the mountains. Anyone heading across the Cascades should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, blankets, and flashlights in case travel becomes delayed.
