Seattle, Washington – Heavy mountain snow will begin stacking up across the North Cascades by 10 p.m. Sunday, making travel over Stevens Pass and near Mount Baker difficult before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, as well as the Cascades of Snohomish and northern King counties. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected, with the heaviest snowfall falling overnight.
Stevens Pass along U.S. 2 and higher stretches of State Route 20 near the Mount Baker area could become snow covered quickly. Reduced visibility and compact snow may create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for early Monday travelers and commercial traffic crossing the passes.
Drivers should carry chains, slow down and check Washington State Department of Transportation pass reports before departure. Rapid snowfall rates overnight may require traction tires or temporary travel restrictions.
Snow tapers by late Monday morning, but slick conditions could linger at higher elevations. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall totals trend higher.
