Stehekin, Washington – Drivers crossing Washington’s Cascade passes could encounter snow-covered roads and reduced visibility by 5 p.m. Sunday as a burst of mountain snowfall moves into western Chelan County.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 5 p.m. Sunday until 2 a.m. Monday for communities including Stevens Pass, Stehekin, and Holden Village. Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, with localized totals near 6 inches in higher elevations.
Snowfall rates may briefly reach 1 inch per hour Sunday evening, which could quickly cover roadways across the central Cascades. The heaviest snow is expected near Stevens Pass along U.S. Highway 2, a key corridor for travel between western and eastern Washington.
Transportation officials warn that the combination of accumulating snow and nighttime temperatures could create slick pavement and rapidly changing travel conditions across mountain highways. Drivers heading through the pass Sunday night should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and prepare for winter driving.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) urges travelers to check road conditions before heading into the Cascades and carry traction tires or chains if required.
Snow should taper off after 2 a.m. Monday, but icy spots may linger into the early morning commute.
