Seattle, Washington – Washington ranks second in the United States for UFO sightings per capita, with one report for every 977 residents, highlighting a sustained pattern of unexplained aerial activity.

According to Casino.ca’s annual UFO sightings analysis, Washington trails only Delaware in per-person reporting rates, based on national data collected since 1974. The rankings compare total sightings against population to identify where reports are most concentrated.

Washington is also among the leaders in total volume, with thousands of sightings recorded over decades. The state’s geography—ranging from dense urban areas to remote mountain and forest regions—has contributed to a wide distribution of reports.

The state is historically linked to one of the most influential UFO cases in the United States. In 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing fast-moving, crescent-shaped objects near Mount Rainier, an event widely credited with popularizing the term “flying saucer.” In another well-known case, multiple witnesses in the Puget Sound region have reported glowing objects hovering or moving silently over water.

More recent sightings included in national databases describe bright lights, sudden altitude changes, and objects accelerating beyond typical aircraft capabilities. None have been confirmed as extraterrestrial.

Researchers say Washington’s combination of clear rural skies, active airspace, and a strong culture of reporting may contribute to its consistently high ranking.

Nationwide, the average chance of reporting a UFO sighting is estimated at about 1 in 1,700, making Washington’s rate significantly higher than average.

Sightings are most commonly reported during nighttime hours, particularly by commuters, outdoor recreationists, and night-shift workers.

Washington’s position near the top of the rankings reinforces its status as one of the most active UFO reporting regions in the country.
