Aberdeen, Washington – Officials are urging coastal residents to prepare for tsunami risks by identifying evacuation zones and safe locations.
According to the National Weather Service, tsunamis are rare but can be highly destructive, particularly along Washington’s coast where offshore earthquakes can trigger rapid coastal impacts.
Preparedness guidance includes knowing official evacuation routes, identifying higher ground or inland safe zones, and developing emergency plans with family members. Residents are also encouraged to prepare emergency kits or “go-bags” with essential supplies in case evacuation is necessary.
The National Weather Service notes that locally generated tsunamis may leave little time to respond, making early action critical. Officials advise residents to stay informed through local alert systems and to follow posted tsunami evacuation signage in coastal communities.
While no active tsunami threat is currently in place, authorities emphasize that advance preparation can significantly improve safety during an emergency.
The reminder is especially relevant for coastal residents, fishermen, and travelers along Washington’s shoreline who may need to act quickly if warnings are issued.
