Spokane, Wash. – A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for Spokane and much of eastern Washington through Thursday night as dry, breezy conditions heighten wildfire risk. Afternoon highs will stay in the 80s, with gusts reaching 22 mph, making outdoor burning or sparks especially dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, the watch begins Thursday afternoon as winds increase out of the southwest at 8 to 13 mph, with stronger gusts possible into the evening. Combined with very low humidity, the region faces prime conditions for rapid fire spread.

The warning comes after a string of sunny days with temperatures well above average for late September. Spokane is expected to hit 85 degrees Wednesday before cooling slightly into the low 80s Thursday. Friday will bring some relief, with highs closer to 72 degrees under mostly clear skies.

Residents are urged to avoid using equipment that may throw sparks, properly extinguish campfires, and keep vehicles off dry grass. Fire crews across eastern Washington remain on heightened alert as vegetation continues to dry out.

The fire danger is expected to ease by Friday, but the extended outlook calls for a slight chance of showers early next week that could help reduce the risk.
