Freezing fog and subfreezing temperatures are creating challenges across Washington today, with Spokane and surrounding areas bracing for a potential snowstorm Thursday night. Motorists on Interstate 90 and other major routes should expect slick roads, limited visibility, and icy conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Spokane, today’s low of 15°F marked the coldest morning of the season for many parts of the region. Temperatures will rise to 28°F by afternoon, with patchy freezing fog lifting after 9 a.m. Conditions remain clear through midweek, but Thursday brings a 30% chance of snow beginning after 4 p.m., increasing to 50% overnight.
By Friday morning, light snow accumulation is possible, though significant snowfall is unlikely. Temperatures will climb to 32°F Friday but plummet again overnight into the teens, ensuring icy conditions persist. Drivers should plan for difficult commutes late Thursday and early Friday, especially on untreated roads and elevated surfaces.
Looking ahead, Spokane remains locked in a winter pattern through the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will feature highs around 31°F under partly sunny skies, with overnight lows dipping as low as 14°F. Those traveling or engaging in outdoor activities should dress warmly and monitor updates for changes in the snow forecast.
The NWS encourages residents to keep winter emergency kits in vehicles and check for local alerts, especially along key travel routes like I-90.
