Spokane, WA – Dangerous winds are expected to create hazardous conditions on area lakes across central and eastern Washington Saturday afternoon and evening, prompting safety warnings for boaters and outdoor enthusiasts.

According to the National Weather Service Spokane office, west winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph in parts of Spokane, Yakima, and the Columbia Basin. The strongest gusts are forecast between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., with peak wind activity centered around late afternoon hours.

These conditions may result in choppy waters and increased risk for capsizing or accidents, particularly on open lakes such as Moses Lake, Lake Roosevelt, and parts of the Columbia River system. Officials are urging boaters to wear life jackets and use engine cut-off devices when navigating.

Central and southeastern Washington are particularly vulnerable due to wide lake exposure and seasonal transitions that amplify wind effects. Similar wind patterns this time of year have caused issues in past Aprils, including overturned small craft and dock damage.

Recreational users should monitor real-time updates from the National Weather Service and delay outings if conditions worsen. Anyone heading out is encouraged to check local advisories and secure any loose outdoor equipment before winds peak.
