Shoreline, WA – King County residents will have the chance to exchange firearms for gift cards this weekend during a gun buyback event hosted by the King County Sheriff’s Office and Public Health – Seattle & King County.

According to the sheriff’s office, the event will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Shoreline Community College, located at 16101 Greenwood Ave. North. The program is being promoted as part of Suicide Prevention Month and is designed to provide a safe and anonymous way for individuals to surrender unwanted firearms.

Officials said participants will not be asked to provide identification, and no personal information will be collected. Firearms must be unloaded and placed in the trunk of a vehicle before arriving at the drop-off site. Law enforcement officers will remove the weapons, and drivers will receive gift cards based on the type of firearm turned in.

Gift card values include $25 for antique or inoperable firearms, $100 for rifles and shotguns, $200 for pistols, and up to $300 for AR-15-style rifles and other machine guns. Items such as toy guns, BB guns, or non-firing replicas will not be eligible for gift cards. Ammunition and firearm accessories, however, will be accepted.

Organizers emphasized that multiple people may bring firearms in one vehicle, but gift cards will only be issued to the driver, who will then be responsible for distribution. Once collected, firearms will be destroyed in accordance with state law, though antiques and relics may be sent out of state.

The sheriff’s office stated the effort is part of an ongoing regional strategy to reduce gun violence and promote public safety through prevention and community-focused initiatives.
