TOPPENISH, WA — A Toppenish family is mourning the loss of a one-year-old boy who died Thursday after being struck by a vehicle in a residential driveway.

The child was reportedly playing outside when the incident occurred during the midday hours. Emergency responders, including local medical units and Life Flight, were dispatched to the scene immediately to provide aid.

According to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around noon on Thursday when the child’s uncle returned home briefly to eat lunch with the family. Authorities stated that as the uncle was pulling out of the driveway to return to work, he was allegedly unaware that the toddler had moved into the path behind his vehicle.

The relative allegedly struck the child with the vehicle while backing out. Despite the rapid arrival of paramedics and the deployment of a Life Flight helicopter, lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. The infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the matter, though initial reports characterize the event as a tragic accident. Investigators have been speaking with family members who were present at the home to piece together the sequence of events. Officials have used the incident as a somber reminder for drivers to conduct a full walk-around of their vehicles when children are known to be playing nearby.

No charges have been filed at this time as the investigation continues. The name of the child and the driver have not been officially released to the public while the family continues to be notified.
