Walla Walla, Washington – A growing legal battle is unfolding across Washington state as multiple sheriffs move to block a newly signed law, arguing it strips power from voters and violates the state constitution.

According to the Washington State Sheriffs’ Association, sheriffs in Spokane, Pend Oreille, Stevens, and Ferry counties filed a complaint in Pend Oreille County Superior Court on Friday seeking to halt implementation of SB5974. The lawsuit also asks the court for an injunction to prevent the law from taking effect while the case proceeds.

The association said the legal challenge centers on what is known as the “Sheriffs Bill,” recently signed by Governor Bob Ferguson. Sheriffs argue the measure shifts authority away from voters by changing how elected sheriffs can be held accountable, raising concerns about constitutional limits and local control.

Support for the lawsuit extends beyond the initial counties, with the association stating that a majority of sheriffs, prosecutors, and several county commissioners across Washington are backing the effort.

Officials emphasized the case is not about avoiding accountability but about preserving voter authority over elected positions. The association also pointed to alternative measures it supported that would have allowed recall votes instead.

The case now moves through the court system, where a judge will determine whether the law can be enforced as written or temporarily blocked. More updates are expected as the legal challenge develops.
