Spokane, Wash. – Fire danger is expected to climb sharply across north-central Washington tonight as thunderstorms bring lightning and gusty winds from the Cascades to the Waterville Plateau. A Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday until 11 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, scattered thunderstorms could spark new wildfires in the Okanogan Valley, Methow Valley, and surrounding Cascade foothills. Rainfall amounts will be light, offering little relief, while outflow winds may become erratic and gusty near storm cells.
Communities near Lake Chelan, Twisp, Winthrop, and Omak face the greatest overnight risks, with crews on alert for fast-moving fire starts. Emergency officials warn that dry fuels combined with lightning strikes could quickly overwhelm resources if multiple ignitions occur.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, have evacuation plans ready, and stay alert for fire updates. Campers and hikers in the Cascades should be prepared to move quickly if storms approach. Power outages are also possible where winds bring down branches or lines.
The Red Flag Warning remains in place through late Monday morning, with additional advisories possible if storms linger.
