Pendleton, OR – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to parts of Oregon and Washington, making travel hazardous through Sunday night. The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings for multiple regions, including the Eastern Washington Cascades, East Slopes of the Oregon Cascades, and the Blue Mountains.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, snowfall above 2,000 feet in the Upper Slopes of the Eastern Washington Cascades will total 3 to 7 inches, with higher elevations above 4,000 feet receiving the most accumulation. The warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. PDT Sunday. Travel could become dangerous due to slick roads and poor visibility.
Meanwhile, the East Slopes of the Oregon Cascades are expected to receive 8 to 16 inches of additional snow, primarily above 4,500 feet, with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph. The warning for this region extends until 11 p.m. PDT Sunday. Blowing snow and strong winds may bring down tree limbs, increasing the risk of power outages.
The Northern and Northwest Blue Mountains, including areas around Ski Bluewood Resort and Tollgate, will see 6 to 10 inches of snow accumulation, with winds gusting up to 35 mph. Hazardous conditions will persist through late Sunday night, affecting portions of I-84 and Highway 204.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible and carry a winter emergency kit if travel is necessary. Motorists should exercise caution, maintain distance from other vehicles, and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions. Those experiencing power outages should report them to their electric company and avoid downed power lines.
