Pendleton, Oregon – Triple-digit heat will grip Eastern Oregon and Southeastern Washington Tuesday, with temperatures surging to 105°F and prompting urgent health warnings across Pendleton, Hermiston, Walla Walla, and the Columbia Basin. Roads, businesses, and daily routines will be impacted as extreme heat poses a major risk for heat-related illness from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Heat Advisory covers the Lower Columbia Basin and Foothills of the Blue Mountains, including Athena, Sunnyside, Dayton, and the Tri-Cities. Residents are urged to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Hot weather will significantly increase the likelihood of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for vulnerable groups such as seniors, young children, and outdoor workers. Utility crews and first responders are on alert, while local agencies remind the public that leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles is especially dangerous.

To stay safe, use air conditioning if available, wear lightweight clothing, and check on neighbors and relatives. Outdoor workers should take frequent shaded breaks and recognize symptoms of heat illness, such as dizziness or confusion. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool area immediately.

Dangerously hot weather is expected to last through Tuesday evening, with cooler temperatures returning midweek. More advisories could follow if high heat persists.
