Seattle, WA –
Mariners across the Strait of Juan de Fuca are facing dangerous conditions tonight as gale-force winds sweep through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle has issued both a Gale Warning and a Small Craft Advisory for Sunday night into early Monday.
According to the NWS, west winds of 30 to 40 knots are expected through 10 p.m. PDT Sunday, followed by southwest winds of 20 to 30 knots continuing until 6 a.m. PDT Monday. The warnings apply to the Central U.S. Waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a key marine corridor linking the Pacific Ocean and Puget Sound.
Forecasters warn that the strong winds will create hazardous seas capable of capsizing or damaging smaller vessels and reducing visibility. Mariners are strongly advised to avoid travel or seek safe harbor until conditions ease early Monday morning.
A Gale Warning indicates that winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or occurring. The NWS recommends that only experienced mariners with properly equipped vessels attempt operations during these conditions.
Residents near coastal areas may notice rough surf and gusty conditions into the night, though inland impacts are expected to be limited.
