Spokane, Washington – A High Wind Warning remains in effect Wednesday morning through early afternoon for parts of southeast Washington and north-central Idaho, with damaging winds expected to impact travel and utilities, according to the National Weather Service in Spokane.
The warning covers Lewis and southern Nez Perce counties in Idaho and lower Garfield and Asotin counties in Washington. Affected locations include Kamiah, Nezperce, Clarkston, Pomeroy, Craigmont, Winchester, Alpowa Summit, Waha, and Soldiers Meadow Road.
Forecasters expect south to southeast winds of 20 to 40 mph, with widespread gusts between 50 and 60 mph. Isolated gusts could reach up to 70 mph in the most exposed areas. The warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. PST Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a 70% chance of wind gusts exceeding 60 mph across western Lewis County and southern Nez Perce County, including the Waha area, along the Snake River corridor between Asotin and Rogersburg, and along Highway 129 south of Asotin. Other areas, including Highway 12 between Pomeroy and Clarkston, are expected to see gusts between 30 and 50 mph.
These winds may blow down trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and recreational vehicles. Strong crosswinds may create hazardous driving conditions along exposed roadways and ridgelines.
Residents are urged to remain indoors during peak winds, stay away from windows, and secure loose outdoor items. Motorists should watch for falling debris and be prepared for sudden gusts while driving.
The National Weather Service advises monitoring local updates as conditions rapidly change during the warning period.
