Colville, Washington – Sensitive plants in northeast Washington could be at risk early Wednesday as a sudden dip in temperatures brings the threat of widespread frost.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. PDT Wednesday for the Northeast Mountains and Okanogan Highlands, including Colville, Deer Park, Newport, Kettle Falls, and Republic. Overnight lows are expected to fall between 32 and 36 degrees, cold enough to damage unprotected vegetation.

Homeowners and growers in areas like Sherman Pass, Chesaw Road, and Springdale-Hunters Road are urged to cover tender plants or bring them indoors if possible. Even potted herbs or starter gardens could suffer in the cold snap. The advisory stretches along key roads including Highway 20 Wauconda Summit and Orin-Rice Road, where cold air tends to pool in low-lying areas.

This marks one of the latest spring frost events in recent years for the region, especially following a warmer-than-average early May.

If you’re in the affected zone, keep a close eye on temps overnight and check plants after sunrise. Additional frost advisories may follow later this week if the cold trend continues.
