Everett, WA – Authorities in Snohomish County are warning residents about a scam targeting families of recently booked jail inmates.
According to the Everett Police Department, scammers have been contacting relatives and demanding immediate bail payments through Zelle, Venmo, or Bitcoin. Investigators stress that this is fraudulent and not connected to the jail system.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office explained that the jail inmate roster is publicly available, making it easier for criminals to exploit worried families. The scam typically involves urgent phone calls or texts claiming that a loved one needs bail money right away.
“If you receive a call asking for payment through money apps or cryptocurrency, this is a scam,” the department stated. “Stop and ask yourself if it seems suspicious before sending any money.”
Officials emphasize that legitimate bail payments are never requested through mobile payment apps or Bitcoin. They also urge residents not to act under pressure if threatened with immediate consequences.
Anyone who suspects they’ve been targeted should call the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 425-407-3999. Residents can also learn more about fraud prevention at the FBI’s website on common scams.
