BALTIMORE, Maryland – Colder-than-normal air settling over the Mid-Atlantic today will set the stage for a wintry mix late tonight, with snow, sleet, and pockets of light icing expected in the mountains and Shenandoah Valley early Sunday. Slick roads are likely in higher terrain before warmer air pushes in later in the day.
According to the National Weather Service, highs today will reach the lower to mid-40s east of the mountains, while western areas remain in the 30s. Temperatures fall sharply tonight into the mid-20s across the Alleghenies and central Shenandoah Valley, allowing a warm front lifting in from the southwest to produce freezing rain, sleet, and snow after midnight.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday for the Alleghenies, the central Shenandoah Valley, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Snow and sleet may accumulate up to 1 inch, with ice amounts ranging from a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch. Roads in communities near Oakland, Cumberland, Petersburg, Harrisonburg, and Staunton could turn slippery before sunrise.
Farther east, including the Baltimore and Washington metro areas, precipitation should fall mostly as rain on Sunday. Temperatures gradually climb from the 30s into the 40s, reducing any icing threat outside the mountains.
Drivers heading west overnight or early Sunday should plan for delays and monitor updated advisories as conditions evolve.
