Washington, DC – Snow could begin covering major commuter routes by Sunday afternoon, setting up slick conditions across the District and surrounding suburbs before the Monday morning rush.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning for the District of Columbia, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Charles, Fairfax, Arlington and parts of northern Virginia. Snow totals of 5 inches or more are possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph. Forecasters warn the heaviest snow may fall overnight Sunday into early Monday.
Interstates 95, 495 and 66, along with the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, could become snow-covered late Sunday night. Bridges and overpasses are expected to freeze first, increasing the risk of spinouts during the Monday commute.
Farther west, including Garrett County in Maryland, western Highland County in Virginia and parts of eastern West Virginia, a separate watch runs from late tonight through Monday afternoon. Those areas could see 6 inches or more of accumulation with wind gusts up to 45 mph, especially along higher elevations and exposed ridges.
Residents should prepare for difficult travel, secure loose outdoor items and monitor updates. Warnings may be issued as snowfall totals and timing become more certain before Sunday afternoon.
