Washington, District of Columbia – Powerful west winds are sweeping across the region this afternoon as a cold front pushes east of I-95, bringing gusts strong enough to impact travel and outdoor activities through the evening.
Wind gusts across the Washington metro are reaching 45 to 55 mph at times, especially in exposed areas and along north–south roadways. Temperatures are steadily falling behind the front, dropping from the 40s into the 30s by evening. According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, the combination of strong winds and cooling air will make it feel sharply colder as the day wears on.
The strongest gusts are expected from mid-afternoon through late evening, potentially causing isolated tree damage and scattered power interruptions. High-profile vehicles may have difficulty on bridges and open stretches of I-95, I-270, and the Capital Beltway. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items such as trash bins and holiday decorations.
Farther west, upslope snow showers are developing along the Allegheny Front as colder air pours into the mountains. According to the National Weather Service, light snow accumulations are possible in higher elevations through tonight, while lower elevations east of the Blue Ridge remain dry but blustery.
By late evening, winds will gradually ease, but colder air will settle in overnight. Lows in the Washington area are expected to fall into the mid to upper 20s by early Tuesday morning, setting the stage for a chilly start to the day. Residents should dress in layers, limit unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak winds, and remain alert for downed tree limbs or debris during the evening hours.
