WASHINGTON, DC – Thunderstorms moving into the D.C. region late Wednesday afternoon could bring damaging wind gusts and isolated hail, potentially disrupting travel along major roadways including I-95 and I-495.

According to the US National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, storms are expected to begin entering the region between 4:00 and 5:00 PM Wednesday. The primary hazard is strong, potentially damaging wind gusts, though isolated hail remains possible with stronger cells.

The storms are forecast to impact a broad portion of the region, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Frederick, Alexandria, and surrounding communities. Peak impacts are expected during the late afternoon and early evening commute window, increasing the risk of hazardous driving conditions on heavily traveled corridors such as I-95, I-495, I-395, and nearby highways.

According to the National Weather Service, storm intensity is expected to diminish after approximately 8:00 PM, with conditions gradually improving later in the evening. However, officials caution that brief but intense conditions may occur as storms move through.

Commuters should prepare for sudden visibility reductions, gusty winds, and isolated roadway debris. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions.

The National Weather Service urges residents to stay weather-aware and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings throughout the evening.

This system may be particularly relevant for students, evening commuters, and service workers traveling during peak storm timing.
