Largo, Maryland – A woman from Washington, D.C. was killed Monday afternoon on Interstate 495 in Prince George’s County after a loose tire from a pickup truck struck her vehicle, causing a violent crash.

According to Maryland State Police, the rear driver-side tire of a Dodge Ram 1500 detached while the vehicle was traveling northbound near Medical Center Drive around 1:50 p.m. The tire crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a Lexus NX200t, driven by 59-year-old Tammy Lynn Edwards. She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The impact sent the Lexus into a concrete barrier and guardrail. The occupants of the Dodge Ram were not injured, and no additional vehicles were involved. Troopers from the Forestville and College Park barracks responded to the crash.

The Maryland Department of Transportation assisted with lane closures while the Maryland State Police Crash Team began its investigation. Authorities say the cause of the tire separation is still under review.

Drivers should expect continued delays near Medical Center Drive as the investigation continues.
